Personality; Hibiki’s most evident personality trait is her kindness. She is a truly sweet natured girl who tries hard to keep everyone happy, even at cost to herself. A huge example of this is her efforts to create a homunculus just for the sake of a woman who was consumed by grief after losing her only daughter. Hibiki, who doesn’t even know how to cast minor spells, much less create a homunculus, throws herself into creating one just because she doesn’t want to see such a nice lady be sad. Even when she manages to make the homunculus and ends up becoming attached to it, she still tries to give it to the woman even if it means being miserable on her part.

As a young child, Hibiki tends to be clumsy. She is a hard worker, yes. But she also rushes and makes mistakes. She is the type to try to help put away books quietly and end up tripping and knocking the books all over instead. As her master Shirotsuki notes, she needs to take things slowly. She has a lot of potential, she just hasn’t figure out how to calm down and look over things carefully before making the leap.

Because she is so young, she is also very naïve. Magic requires a sacrifice on the part of the caster, but even so she believes strongly in it. When presented with the issue of a sacrifice that could potentially kill the user, she declares that she will create a magic that needs no sacrifice. She is highly idealistic, which can be frustrating for some. This is particularly why she places so much faith in magic – she was taught that magic should be used for good, so the idea of some of the horrors that have come from magic don’t usually occur to her. One has to basically shove these things in her face as an example – she can’t conceive of it otherwise.

Incidentally, for all her talk of magic, she isn’t very good at it. In fact, besides making tea, Hibiki will insist herself that she isn’t good at anything. She knows she messes up often, and that coupled with the fact that her parents abandoned her for being useless has left her with a low self esteem. She really does believe that making tea is her only talent, even though the many instances of her helping others through their problems says otherwise.

It doesn’t help that Hibiki is kind of a pushover. It is ridiculously easy to drag her into something she doesn’t necessarily want to be a part of. After maybe a little weak struggling, chances are she’ll just go with it as best as she can. Scary things outright terrify her, and she deals with pressure by breaking down into tears.

However… She can also be shockingly resilient. Push her too hard and there is a very real possibility she will shoot through terror and come right back out in a state filled with so much determination, she simply will not back down. It is this that helps her to complete a spell by herself while her master was disabled and the place she called home was in the middle of being robbed. This is also what keeps her going at trying to cast a spell even when being shot at with rubber bullets. Basically, when it counts, Hibiki can pull through.

Finally, some smaller notes. For one thing, she is fairly polite, addressing nearly everyone with the honorific –san, unless told otherwise. –Chan is reserved for those who are younger than her, which… doesn’t happen a whole lot. She has a healthy respect for (and in some cases, fear of) authority figures. And most importantly – she loves to brew tea!

“I’m home!” Even though there was no one in her room to respond, Hibiki called the words out anyway. By now it was more force of habit than anything else – since each person was given their own room, there would never be anyone waiting for her. Still, it felt necessary to say, so say it she did.

With a weary sigh, she flopped onto her bed. When she had first arrived, it had been explained to her that she needed to help bring color into the world. While she was determined to help in any way she could, she couldn’t help but think that it was impossible – that was to say, impossible for her. In just a few days she had been convinced that the others in the city could manage to bring color back to the world… After all, they all seemed so confident and capable despite everything. Even though the task was so vague, they marched ahead regardless. And yet here was Hibiki, already beginning to doubt herself after less than a week.

“Mmph!” She rolled her face into her pillow, blushing with embarrassment. How could she? She had been picked for this duty… but all she could do was wonder if she could actually do it. It was a conflicted feeling. While she felt she could trust the judgment of her patron god, she wasn’t all that sure she could trust in her own ability.

Well… what little “ability” she had. Even now, her skill set had not expanded much beyond making tea. She knew she could supposedly heal people, but no opportunities for her to use that ability had come up yet. And somehow, she had a sinking feeling that even if she tried, she would find a way to mess up. She really was no good at anything besides making tea, but how could that help anyone? No matter how good it was, a cup of tea wouldn’t help restore color to an entire world…

She rolled over once again, her gaze wandering over her room. Before long it fell upon a small plush toy she had found on one of her excursions into the city. It was beaten up and still a little discolored despite its washing, but she still rather liked it. It was in the shape of an animal much like the gusks she was so familiar with, albeit with browner fur and only a single tail. While she knew it was pointless and frankly childish, she liked to think of it as her personal guardian here. Without Master Shirotsuki on her shoulder at all times ready to give her support, she had become attached to the small stuffed animal instead. It was already a little like her, having been abandoned as it was. Maybe it would understand her better for it and watch out for her during the lonely nights, much like her Master did at home.

“Master…” the words came out as a whisper. “Master… will I really be able to do this? I’m all by myself… Not even Shi-chan or Ahito-kun are here, either.”

The thought alone was enough to make her imagine a comforting hand on her head, and even hear his quiet reply.

”You will be just fine, Hibiki. I am sure of it. Just keep being yourself and working hard, and you will be able to do anything you put your mind to.”

“…That’s right.” She murmured to herself as she slowly sat up. “I just have to do my best. Even though I’m still not very sure what they want me to do… I’ll just have to work hard to find out!” Suddenly, she felt much more at peace. Before, she had felt like she was simply floating without a purpose, but now that she had come to a decision, it was like she was grounded. And with that came a sense of capability. She might not know what it was she was supposed to do, but… she would find out. And she would be able to help. And as long as she was able to do that much… that was what was most important.
